Rating Field Inspector Development
Develop the field skills that reliable ratings are built on.
Every HERS Rating rests on someone's field work: the observations, measurements, diagnostic tests and photographs taken on site. A Rating Field Inspector (RFI) performs those authorized field tasks under the supervision the rating process requires, and the quality of the rating depends on how well they are done and recorded. Green Summit, RESNET Rating Provider No. 1998-221, supports RFI candidates and developing field professionals through practical instruction, mentoring and role-appropriate evaluation. Our focus is the quality of the observations, tests and records the rater relies on, because that is what our own QA team reviews in real rating files.

Who this is for
People entering building-performance work from the trades, construction or a first field job, rating companies developing their own field staff, and Tribal Nations building inspection capability in the community.
What we do
- Explain the role and its requirements. We set out the RFI's field responsibilities, the supervision the role works under and the credential steps that apply, so you know the boundaries before you start.
- Build field documentation skills. We develop accurate, project-specific observations, photographs and equipment records, the evidence a reviewer will judge the rating by.
- Practice diagnostics. We build competence in authorized testing, correct setup and recording procedures on the equipment used in the field.
- Evaluate and give feedback. We coordinate the field evaluation the credential requires and work with you on the skills that still need development.
Our process
- Confirm the role. We review your experience, your employer or rater relationship and the requirements that apply to the RFI credential.
- Plan the learning. Together we settle the instruction, practice and evaluation you need.
- Develop field competence. You improve through supervised work and specific feedback, on real projects where the site and supervision allow.
- Document qualification. We complete the required records and confirm the role you are permitted to perform.
What you receive
A learning plan matched to your starting point, supervised field practice with feedback on your observations, tests and records, coordination of the field evaluation your credential requires, and the documentation of what you have completed and what role you are authorized to fill. Your employer or supervising rater sees the same record, so everyone agrees on what you may do.
Benefits
- A practical route into field-verification work that does not require a rater's credential on day one.
- Clearer responsibilities between the RFI, the rater and the provider, so no one is working outside their role.
- Better evidence feeding the rating process, which is what the rater, the provider and the builder all want.
Why Green Summit
Green Summit is a consulting partner delivering end-to-end compliance solutions in building performance: a licensed engineering firm founded in 2014 that holds RESNET Rating Provider No. 1998-221. We connect RFI development with the standards our QA team reviews in real rating files, so field skills, ethical documentation and accurate testing are developed together rather than treated as separate checkboxes.
RFI qualification is not the same as HERS Rater certification, and it does not authorize independent work outside the role. Program-specific tasks may require additional training or credentials, and we tell you which ones before you take them on.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Rating Field Inspector?
A Rating Field Inspector is a RESNET-recognized field role within the HERS rating process. The RFI performs authorized inspections, measurements and diagnostic tests on site under the supervision of the responsible rating professional, and the rater relies on that work to complete and submit the rating. It is a defined, supervised role with its own credential steps, and it is distinct from HERS Rater certification.
What does an RFI do?
An RFI performs authorized field tasks within the rating process under the supervision and program requirements that apply: observing installed conditions, taking measurements, running diagnostic tests and recording the evidence. That role is not the same as independently producing and submitting every aspect of a HERS Rating.
Can this be a first step into building-performance work?
Yes. Field skills, documentation and supervised practice make a practical starting point, provided you begin with a clear understanding of the RFI's authorized responsibilities and where they end. You can start here and decide later whether to pursue the rater credential.
What skills are emphasized?
Building observations, accurate measurements, diagnostic procedures, photographic evidence, data integrity and clear communication with the responsible rating professional. Those are the things a QA reviewer looks for in the file.
Are examinations or field evaluations required?
The credential requirements in force determine the examinations and evaluations. We define those steps with you at the start, and we never treat attendance alone as qualification.
Can an RFI later pursue HERS Rater certification?
Yes, and additional requirements apply. We can help plan a progression that recognizes your existing experience without assuming the two credentials are interchangeable.
