HERS Rater Certification Pathway
Know every step between where you are today and a HERS Rater credential.
Finishing a class does not make you a HERS Rater. RESNET sets the certification standard, and reaching it means the required education, examinations, mentored field practice, evaluations and a Rating Provider relationship, each satisfied in full. Green Summit, RESNET Rating Provider No. 1998-221, helps you understand that pathway and work through it. We connect the education, exams, mentoring, field practice and provider requirements into one plan matched to where you are starting from, whether that is a construction trade, an energy-auditing background or a first job in the field.

Who this is for
Candidates who want to become certified HERS Raters, experienced construction and energy professionals adding a rating credential, and Tribal Nations and employers building rating capability in their own workforce.
What we do
- Review your pathway. We assess your prior training, experience and any examinations or evaluations you have already completed, so the plan starts from what you have, not from zero.
- Prepare you technically. We develop your understanding of building science, energy modeling, diagnostic testing and documentation, the four things a rating file is made of.
- Mentor your practice. We coordinate supervised ratings, practical field work and feedback from the people who review rating files under our providership.
- Coordinate provider and credential steps. We identify the remaining requirements and the documentation the certification process calls for, and we keep the list current as you complete each item.
Our process
- Review your starting point. Share your prior training, experience and goals with us.
- Set the development plan. We identify the education, exams, practice and evaluations still required, in the order that makes sense for you.
- Practice and demonstrate. You complete the technical development and build the evidence of competence the credential asks for.
- Confirm the next authorization. We document completion and follow the provider and credential requirements through to your certification and affiliation.
What you receive
A written development plan that names every remaining requirement, mentored practice on real rating work, feedback on your field and modeling performance, and records of each evaluation you complete. When the pathway is finished, you know exactly what you are authorized to do and which provider relationship supports it.
Benefits
- A clear view of the steps still needed, so no requirement surprises you at the end.
- Practical mentoring connected to rating work, not to a classroom exercise.
- Support that distinguishes course completion from professional authorization, so you always know which one you have earned.
Why Green Summit
Green Summit is a consulting partner delivering end-to-end compliance solutions in building performance. We combine experienced Quality Assurance Designee (QAD) and training personnel with our own RESNET Rating Providership, in a licensed engineering firm founded in 2014, so the standards you train to are the standards our QA team applies to real rating files. Training is delivered or coordinated through accredited arrangements suited to each course, and we never treat Rating Provider status as Training Provider accreditation.
Certification depends on meeting the current requirements in full, not on attending a class. Dates, course approvals and the responsible training-provider arrangement are confirmed before you enroll in anything.
Frequently asked questions
What is a HERS Rater?
A HERS Rater is a professional certified by RESNET to produce home energy ratings. The rater models the home, verifies installed conditions through inspection and diagnostic testing, and submits the rating through a RESNET Rating Provider's quality-assurance and registration process. Certification depends on completing the education, examinations, practical evaluations and provider affiliation the standard sets out, and it is maintained through ongoing QA and renewal.
How do I start a HERS Rater pathway?
Begin with a review of your background and the credential requirements that apply to you. We identify the training, exams, field experience and evaluations still required before we propose a development plan, so the plan reflects your starting point rather than a standard syllabus.
Does finishing a class make me a certified HERS Rater?
No. Course completion and certification are distinct. The required examinations, practical work, evaluations and provider requirements must all be satisfied, and we tell you which of them remain.
Can experienced construction professionals participate?
Yes, and relevant field experience is valuable. It does not waive any requirement automatically, so we evaluate your starting skills and the work needed to meet the credential standard.
Is Green Summit a Rating Provider or a Training Provider?
Green Summit is a RESNET Rating Provider, No. 1998-221. That role is identified separately from any training-provider accreditation or delivery partnership, and we confirm the course-specific provider and approval with you before enrollment.
What happens after certification?
Ongoing quality assurance, professional development and the renewal requirements that apply to your credential continue. Affiliation and technical support are there to keep your practice consistent, not to end with a certificate, and our providership is one place that support can come from.
