Thermal Storage & Grid-Interactive Buildings

When your building needs energy matters as much as how much it needs.

A building that uses the same energy at a different hour can cost less to run and ask less of the grid, which is why thermal storage and advanced controls are judged by when they move load, not only by how much energy they save. Heating, cooling and hot-water loads raise different storage questions from general electrical backup, and a useful evaluation starts with the thermal demand, the operating schedule, the control strategy and the evidence that exists for the proposed technology. Green Summit is developing advisory and modeling approaches for thermal storage, advanced controls and the other technologies that connect building loads with more flexible energy use. We say so plainly, because part of the work is identifying what the available tools can and cannot yet represent.

Who this is for

Developers, owners, housing providers, public institutions, Tribal Nations, program administrators and technology companies exploring thermal storage, flexible loads or a pilot on a real building.

What we do

  • Frame the application. We identify the heating, cooling or hot-water load in question and the role storage or controls would play in serving it.
  • Review integration requirements. We examine how the concept would interact with heat pumps, photovoltaics, batteries and day-to-day building operations.
  • Define the analysis method. We identify the tools, data and validation the question needs, rather than assuming mainstream software already represents every configuration.
  • Plan demonstration and verification. We develop a defined approach for pilot measurement, performance evaluation or further technical development.

Our process

  1. Identify the load, the use case and the decision. We establish what the study has to support before we choose how to study it.
  2. Assess the evidence. We weigh the available evidence, the integration constraints and the analysis options.
  3. Agree the next stage. We settle on a technically sound next-stage study or pilot with you.

What you receive

A project-specific advisory scope, the feasibility questions that matter for your building and an analysis or validation plan. Detailed modeling, control implementation and pilot services depend on tool capability and project readiness, and we establish what is possible before we commit to a method or a result.

Benefits

  • A clearer view of whether thermal storage fits the building's loads and operating schedule.
  • A defined plan for controls, measurement and follow-up before anyone relies on projected load-shifting value.
  • An honest account of where the analysis tools are mature and where a custom approach is needed.

Why Green Summit

Green Summit is a licensed engineering firm founded in 2014 and a consulting partner delivering end-to-end compliance solutions in building performance. Our engineers, modelers and field professionals connect the analysis to installed conditions and to the decision the owner needs to make, and this work can stand alone or feed a coordinated assessment, implementation and verification engagement. Because we also commission building systems and perform measurement and verification, a thermal-storage concept we help you evaluate can be measured by the same team once it is running, with findings that are engineered substantiation, not estimates.

Frequently asked questions

What is thermal storage, and what makes a building grid-interactive?

Thermal storage holds heating or cooling produced at one time so it can serve a heating, cooling or hot-water load at another, which lets the building shift when its equipment runs. A grid-interactive building uses that kind of storage, advanced controls and related technologies to make its energy use more flexible in response to tariffs, demand or grid conditions. The value lies in timing and coordination, so the evaluation starts with the thermal load and the operating schedule.

Does thermal storage always reduce annual energy use?

No. Its value may come from shifting demand, coordinating equipment operation or serving thermal loads at different times, and losses, controls and tariffs all affect the result. We show you which of those effects the concept actually delivers for your building rather than assuming a saving.

Does thermal storage replace electrical batteries?

Not generally. Thermal storage serves heating or cooling needs, while electrical batteries serve electrical loads. The right combination depends on the project, and we evaluate the two alongside each other rather than as substitutes.

Are all modeling features available now?

No. Emerging configurations may require custom analysis or validation, and we identify those limitations before committing to a method or a result. That is the practical meaning of a service we are still developing: we tell you what the tools can show today and what a pilot would have to measure instead.

What information is needed for a thermal-storage study?

Heating and cooling load profiles, the existing plant configuration, tariffs, space constraints and control capabilities establish feasibility. Equipment performance and operating strategy must be evaluated for the specific site, so a vendor's generic performance claim is a starting point, not an answer.

How will you compare different operating strategies?

The scope can compare charging and discharge timing, peak-demand effects, annual energy, carbon assumptions and lifecycle cost. We keep a scenario analysis clearly distinct from a measured performance guarantee, and we say which one you are looking at.

Let's find out whether shifting your thermal load is worth studying.

Tell us the building and its location, the heating, cooling or hot-water load you have in mind and what decision the study needs to support.
