Applied Research & Technology Validation

Turn a research question into field evidence that moves technology into practice.

Applied research succeeds or fails on the connection between the question and the field. A well-defined performance question, a measurement plan built around the decision it supports and an honest record of what happened on site are what turn a demonstration into evidence someone can use. Green Summit supports applied building-energy research with technical planning, field deployment, instrumentation, modeling and performance analysis, helping research teams turn a defined question into an executable work package and a usable record. It is the work we perform today as technical subcontractor to the University of Central Florida on the U.S. Department of Energy–funded PV-GEMS project: site-readiness review, contractor coordination, field support, energy modeling, technical QA/QC, data-logging commissioning, data validation and reporting.

Who this is for

Universities and public institutions, Tribal organizations, utilities running pilots and manufacturers that need a building-energy technology evaluated in the field under stated conditions.

What we do

  • Plan the research or demonstration. We clarify objectives, sites, equipment interfaces, measurements and reporting responsibilities before anything is installed.
  • Support field deployment. We coordinate site readiness, contractors and technical QA around the installed building-energy systems.
  • Instrument and analyze. We collect, quality-check and interpret the data the plan calls for, alongside models and utility information.
  • Report the findings. We document methods, assumptions, findings, limitations and the lessons that matter to the project, in a form the next reader can check.

Our process

  1. Define the question. Together we settle the performance question and the decision it supports.
  2. Plan the methods. We set the measurements, baseline, data rights, review roles and deliverables.
  3. Deploy and evaluate. We coordinate authorized field work, monitoring and analysis.
  4. Report responsibly. We explain results and limitations through the project's approved channels.

Benefits

  • A practical connection between the research plan and its execution in the field.
  • Traceable data and assumptions that stand up to technical review.
  • Findings organized for the next decision, whether that is further research, engineering or commercialization.
  • A written record of methods, assumptions, findings and limitations that the sponsor can build on.

Why Green Summit

Green Summit is a consulting partner delivering end-to-end compliance solutions in building performance, specialty tax credits and incentives, and advisory services. Founded in 2014, we are a licensed engineering firm and a Cherokee-TERO certified partner, and we combine building science with system integration, field QA and monitoring, so the team that plans the measurements is the team that commissions the instruments and validates the data. We identify experience held by our team members separately from Green Summit's contracted project roles, and we never claim prior-employer research as Green Summit work.

This is research and technical support. It is not automatic product certification, clinical validation or regulatory approval, and public use of sponsor names, site images and findings requires the permissions that apply to the project. We would rather tell a sponsor what a demonstration can and cannot show before the instruments go in than explain it afterward.

Frequently asked questions

What is applied research and technology validation?

Applied research tests how a building-energy technology performs under real conditions, on real sites, against a defined question. Technology validation is the disciplined version of that work: a measurement plan tied to the decision the sponsor needs to make, field deployment with technical QA, data that has been quality-checked and a report that states limitations alongside findings. The result is evidence that a research, engineering or commercialization decision can rest on.

What research work can you support?

We scope building-energy modeling, site readiness, instrumentation, field deployment, technical QA, monitored-data analysis and reporting for a defined question or demonstration. On PV-GEMS, that scope includes site-readiness review, contractor coordination, field support, energy modeling, technical QA/QC, data-logging commissioning, data validation and reporting.

Can you partner with a university or manufacturer?

Yes. The agreement should define the technical tasks, deliverables, access, data ownership, publication rights and the responsibilities of the lead research organization, and we settle those before field work begins. On PV-GEMS, the University of Central Florida leads the research and Green Summit carries a defined technical scope as its subcontractor.

How is a pilot different from a product certification?

A pilot evaluates performance under its stated conditions. It does not automatically confer a product listing, safety approval, code acceptance or certification from a separate body, and we never describe pilot results as if it did.

How do you make the results useful?

We connect the measurement plan to the decisions the sponsor needs to make, document assumptions and data quality, and report limitations alongside findings. A result you cannot trace to its data is not a result you can act on.

Does the research have to be federally funded?

No. We support privately funded and collaborative technical work as well, with the same discipline: a defined question, a measurement plan and a report that states its limitations. Federally funded partnerships have their own page because their contracting and reporting requirements need explicit attention.
