HERS File & Field Quality Assurance
Connect every rating conclusion to a record someone else can follow.
Quality assurance in a HERS practice has two halves. File QA asks whether the model, the supporting records and the test data support the submitted rating; field QA asks whether the observations and tests behind that file were performed correctly, and it is not the same thing as a general site visit. Green Summit performs both within its responsibilities as RESNET Rating Provider No. 1998-221. We review how model inputs, field observations, test results and project records support the rating, then document exactly what it takes to resolve any deficiency.
- RESNET Rating Provider No. 1998-221
- Licensed engineering firm
- Founded 2014
- Audit-ready documentation
Who this is for
HERS Raters and rating companies affiliated with our providership, and builders who want an additional, separately defined consistency review across the raters they work with.
What we do
- Review the rating file. We check the model and its supporting evidence for completeness, internal consistency and the rating requirements that apply, and we say precisely where a file falls short.
- Perform field quality assurance. We carry out the required observations and field reviews under qualified Quality Assurance Designee (QAD) oversight, following the provider's quality process.
- Trace the evidence. We connect test exports, photographs, installed conditions and software inputs, so each conclusion in the rating points back to something a reviewer can see.
- Correct and feed back. We communicate findings, review the corrections and identify where mentoring or enhanced review will prevent the same finding next time.
Our process
- Confirm the authorized work. We establish the rater relationship, the project and the review requirements that apply before any file is opened.
- Review the evidence. We evaluate the file and the field information within the QA scope, comparing what the model claims with what the records show.
- Resolve findings. We document each corrective action, the party responsible for it and the follow-up it requires.
- Close through provider controls. We complete the review and registration workflow, so the closed finding and the registered rating tell the same story.
What you receive
Written findings that identify the issue, the evidence reviewed and the correction needed; a record of how each finding was closed; and, where patterns emerge across files, a clear recommendation for mentoring, clarification or revised procedure. Your rating record ends up readable by someone who was never on site.
Benefits
- A rating record that can be followed and reviewed by a provider, a program or an auditor.
- Clear feedback on technical and documentation issues, written to be acted on rather than filed.
- A repeatable approach to quality across every professional affiliated with the providership.
Why Green Summit
Green Summit is a consulting partner delivering end-to-end compliance solutions in building performance, and our QA combines rating expertise with building science and field practice. A licensed engineering firm founded in 2014, we hold RESNET Rating Provider No. 1998-221 and review files the way an outside examiner would. We focus on consistent methods and reliable evidence, never on predetermined scores, and we never rubber-stamp a review.
Builder-requested oversight involving raters under other providers is a separate service, and we coordinate it with the responsible providers. We cannot assume their mandatory registration or QA authority, and we never present builder oversight as a replacement for it.
Frequently asked questions
What is HERS quality assurance?
HERS quality assurance is the review a RESNET Rating Provider performs on the ratings its affiliated raters submit. File QA examines the rating file: the model, supporting records and test data. Field QA verifies the observations and tests performed on site, under a qualified Quality Assurance Designee (QAD). Together they establish that the submitted rating is supported by evidence before it is registered.
What is reviewed in file QA?
The model, the supporting records, the test data and the documentation, measured against the rating requirements that apply. Every finding we issue is traceable to the evidence and to the specific issue that needs correction.
What is reviewed in field QA?
The authorized reviewer observes or verifies the field conditions and procedures the rating relies on, records findings and follows the provider's quality process. Field QA is a defined review under provider controls, not a general site visit, and we never treat the two as interchangeable.
Can a builder request additional consistency review?
Yes, as a separately defined service coordinated with the raters and their providers. Additional builder oversight never silently replaces the mandatory QA those providers are responsible for.
How are deficiencies closed?
The process identifies the issue, the responsible party, the evidence required and the re-review or reinspection needed. We close a finding on records, not on a verbal assurance that it was fixed.
Can recurring findings inform training?
Yes. Patterns across files or field reviews show where clarification, mentoring or a revised procedure will do the most good. We share that insight subject to the information-sharing permissions in place.
Let's talk about the quality of your rating files.
