Residential Energy-Code Compliance
Keep the design, the model and the installed home telling the same story.
The energy code sets the target for a new home, but the jurisdiction sets the rules of evidence: which code edition and amendments apply, which compliance pathway and software it accepts, and who has to sign. That choice decides what the home must show at closeout, from the model or calculations to the equipment data, inspections and leakage tests. Teams that settle it before construction rarely meet a surprise at the final inspection. Green Summit, a licensed engineering firm and RESNET Rating Provider, gives residential project teams the energy-code modeling, technical documentation and field verification that keep the approved design, the model and the installed home aligned in the jurisdiction that governs the project.
- Licensed engineering firm
- RESNET Rating Provider No. 1998-221
- Founded 2014
- Audit-ready documentation
Who this is for
Developers, builders and design teams delivering new or renovated homes, as well as HERS Raters who want their ratings and their code documentation to work together.
What we do
- Establish the pathway. We identify the governing code, the project type and the jurisdiction-specific requirements with the responsible design team, so everyone is building toward the same evidence.
- Prepare the energy analysis. We develop the calculations or models the pathway requires and the compliance documentation that travels with them.
- Review changes. When a window package, an assembly or a piece of equipment is substituted, we check it against the energy assumptions behind the approved design before it reaches the field.
- Coordinate the field evidence. We support the inspections and leakage testing the pathway calls for and organize the technical records the jurisdiction expects to see.
Our process
- Set the ground rules. We establish the location, the code edition, the project scope and the responsible parties.
- Build the analysis and carry it through design. We develop the required analysis and coordinate design changes as they happen, not after the fact.
- Verify and hand off. We complete the verification the engagement includes and deliver the documentation to the people who need it.
What you receive
Energy models or calculations, compliance-support documents and the verification records your engagement includes, organized so the plan reviewer and the field inspector read the same record. Permit approval and official code determinations remain with the authority having jurisdiction; our job is to make sure what you submit is complete, consistent and supported.
Benefits
- Earlier visibility into residential energy-code documentation and field-verification needs, while the design can still change.
- Tighter coordination between the approved design and the evidence required at closeout.
- One consistent record of model inputs, equipment data, inspections and test results.
Why Green Summit
Green Summit is a consulting partner delivering end-to-end compliance solutions in building performance, specialty tax incentives and advisory services. Founded in 2014, we are a licensed engineering firm and RESNET Rating Provider No. 1998-221, so the engineers, modelers and field professionals who prepare the analysis are the same people who connect it to installed conditions and to the decision the owner has to make.
The work stands on its own or feeds a coordinated assessment, implementation and verification scope. Either way, the documentation is built to be audit-ready from day one, and the same record can serve the jurisdiction, a certification program and any incentive the home may qualify for.
Frequently asked questions
What is residential energy-code compliance?
It is the demonstration, to the authority having jurisdiction, that a new or renovated home meets the energy provisions of the code that jurisdiction has adopted. The pathway the project follows determines the evidence: an energy model or a set of calculations, equipment and assembly documentation, and field inspections or leakage tests. Green Summit prepares that analysis and documentation and supports the field verification; the jurisdiction makes the compliance determination.
Does a HERS Rating automatically prove code compliance?
Not in every jurisdiction or on every pathway. The adopted code and the local acceptance requirements determine the analysis and documentation a home needs, so we establish what your jurisdiction accepts before anyone treats the rating as the compliance record.
Can you replace the engineer of record?
Not under a standard energy-consulting scope. Design responsibility and professional sign-off stay with the engineer of record unless the engagement explicitly defines a different role. We work alongside your design professionals, not in their place.
When should we involve you?
During design, before the equipment and assemblies are final; that is when a pathway decision costs the least to act on. We can also review a project that is already under way, subject to the evidence that still exists.
How do Manual J, S and D relate to energy compliance?
They cover the residential load calculation, equipment selection and duct design. They strengthen the overall design and can inform the model, but they do not replace the jurisdiction's separate energy-code documentation or field-verification requirements.
Can you help across more than one jurisdiction?
Yes. For each project we establish the code edition, adopted amendments, accepted software and responsible professionals that apply there. An approval in one jurisdiction is never treated as automatic acceptance in another.
